Career Opportunities in the Massachusetts School Business Profession

A career as a school business official is one of the most demanding, yet possibly one of the most rewarding career choices a person with business training can make. Some roles, such as Treasurer/CFO and Business Manager, require a college degree and a license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Other roles, such as Transportation Supervisor or Food Service Director, require extensive field experience and can also require other specialized certification(s). Continuing education is expected in all of these roles.

The person who excels in a career in school business is someone who is willing to go the extra mile. Though there are some long nights and a few weekends, there can be a healthy balance between work and family. While some overnight travel (mostly in state) is required, most school business officials can go home to their families after work.

Massachusetts' 487 school districts serve communities as diverse as the state. Some districts, especially in rural areas, may have fewer than 1,000 students and one building. The largest district, Boston, has 60,150 students and 136 schools.  School business officials serving school districts face challenges as unique as the communities they serve. The districts also mirror Massachusetts' great diversity—from countywide districts to small village districts near a big city. Some districts serve several farming communities. Others serve sprawling suburbs.

Career journeys for school business officials are as varied as their personalities. A few actually spend an entire career in one position in one district. Many others spend a career in one role, but have a "tour of duty" among several districts. Others change roles within the profession. All proudly serve Massachusetts' most precious resources, our children.
