Organized to facilitate the MASBO functions and to help members develop and maintain expertise in the various facets of school business administration, these committees provide periodic updates, through the MASBO newsletter, to the general membership and assist individual members in researching and solving specific problems. Active committees include:
The Legislative Committee maintains liaison with state and federal lawmakers, presents MASBO's view on issues, and advises the membership about both pending legislation and trends in the House and Senate.
The Mentorship Committee was created to provide guidance and assistance to newly appointed school business officials. A meeting is held each year in which guest speakers discuss relevant topics in school business management. New school business officials are matched with seasoned members to provide one-to-one support on a variety of issues. The Mentorship Committee is also responsible for updating the MASBO Reference Manual which provides an array of school business operational information, contacts, and documents. The manual is distributed to new members as part of their participation in the mentorship program. The mentorship program truly captures the "service above self" attitude projected by the association in their quest to help new members of the association.
The Technology Committee was formed to address the growing role technology plays in school business management and in MASBO itself. The Technology Committee has been made a permanent committee of MASBO by the Board. The committee has developed this web site; it also provides demonstrations of software applications and keeps the membership apprised of changes in technology and its implications for school business management.
The Certification Committee maintains liaison with the Massachusetts Department of Education, Bureau of Certification, to keep current with state certification requirements. This committee also provides guidance through the certification process for MASBO members.
Legal Assistance Committee
This committee researches points of law through MASBO's legal counsel and assists members with specific problems.
Vendor Advisory Committee
The Vendor Advisory committee will be established in order to address Goal #7 in MASBO’s Strategic Plan which states, “promote effective and appropriate relationships and partnerships between MASBO members and vendors”. It is logically expected that the implementation of this goal will significantly improve communication between vendor affiliates and the Board of Directors.
Their advice and input will be sought on a number of extremely important issues including but not limited to assisting in:
The Vendor Advisory committee will function as a “standing committee” with their primary tasks delineated above. The size of the committee will vary from year to year because participation will depend upon the number of responses to a “Call for Volunteers” that will be issued to all Vendor Affiliates annually on April 1st. The Chair of the committee will be elected for a three year term by fellow committee members. An open line of communication is established between the advisory committee and the Board member or designee.
The Advisory Committee will be established with the initial “Call for Volunteers” on April 1st. At least a two week period will be allotted for responses to the “Call for Volunteers”. The Executive Director will then convene a meeting of respondents to explain in detail the role of the committee, establish a preliminary meeting schedule, and discuss the election of a committee chair, which as mentioned previously, will serve for a total of three years.
